Hong Kong Life Education Theatre Festival

Youth suicide has become a major public concern recently in Hong Kong. Teenagers are under great stress from families, school and social expectation. By integrating theatre with counselling elements, we adopt devised theatre (編作劇場) and narrative therapy (敍事治療) to encourage youth to express their opinions, explore their own value and in turn reduce the negative labelling of youngster.

In January, the school tour "Walking Through the Darkness" will kick off the first stage of Hong Kong Life Education Theatre Festival with Thoughtful Theatre in 30 secondary schools and colleges. It aims to provide basic knowledge on Narrative Theatre. At the second stage, “Joint-school Narrative Theatre Workshop” will openly recruit 18 students to create an original drama script of their own stories. This workshop gives them the freedom to experiment with values, beliefs and roles in lives.

There will be a final performance that showcase their hard work. Participants will have a chance to perform their original drama in a public theatre and share their inner thoughts and feelings. Finally, the drama tutors, social workers and young people will work together to transform their stories and the experiences into a book.

1st stage - “Walking Through the Darkness” Touring

Hong Kong Life Education Theatre Festival is put forward by HKALPS and Thoughtful Theatre and sponsored by The Home Affairs Bureau The Commission on Youth. The first stage of the Festival will be a school and community tour performance of "Walking Through the Darkness". With life education theatre, we hope to provide a chance for teenagers to explore their own values. We are now inviting different organisations to attend the public community performance at VESSEL!

"Walking Through the Darkness":

A student of poor academic result and low motivation is constantly in conflict with his family and teacher. It is a blow to his self-esteem in face of the enormous academic pressure. On the other side, parents and teachers are struggling to balance between showing concern and being strict. With three people, two types of relationships and different kinds of pressure, how are they going to overcome negative emotion and walk through the darkness together?
